Independent Activity 1: Who owns the data?
Read the following article
http://mashable.com/2009/02/16/facebook-tos-privacy/
Comment on who owns the data on Facebook and for how long they own it.
Discuss ways you might minimise this particular threat
From the Facebook terms and conditions any user content is owned by them, and they can do what they please with it. Also they can hold onto it forever, even after you have finished using the Facebook service. This is quite scary when you think about it. Do you own the rights to your own name now? Or is it just information that is owned by a global company. It makes one question.
It makes it hard for someone to minimise the uploading and dissemination of your personal content, especially when it comes in the form of a picture. For instance, you cannot stop someone taking a picture of you with their camera and then uploading it to Facebook. You can minimise this threat only through conscious monitoring of what content goes onto Facebook and other social networks alike. Be mindful of what you’re posting and what other are posting about you. The final and drastic option would be to stop using facebook and other sites alike all together
Independent Activity 2: Who owns the data?
Twitter is an extremely fast-growing micro-blogging service.
Use the Web to research and find answers to the following questions –
- What is twitter?
Twitter is a social micro blogging service. It allows an individual to type an individual 160 character message about themselves, or any topic of their choice.
- How does a blog differ from a micro-blog?
I blog is a formal article explaining in detail about a topic or situation, where a micro blog is more of a notification or a status. A micro blog could be the first sentence of a actual blog.
- How fast has twitter grown?
Twitter is growing exponentially. From February 2008 to February 2009 Twitter grew 1382% (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10200161-36.html) , and it is still growing. This is extraordinarily larger than any other web-site on the internet.
- Why do think it is so popular?
It allows individuals to be kept informed about what is going on with their friends or what is going on in the world in general. Gossip! People love Gossip. Twitter is kind of like Gossip, so people are interested in what is going on around them; they want to be in the know.
